“Company A agrees to buy Company B” and “Company A completes its acquisition of Company B” describe different stages. A headline can compress them into the same story, but the distinction matters when you are mapping who owns a business or explaining a company’s current operations.
An announced agreement may still depend on specified conditions. As one jurisdictional example, the US Federal Trade Commission explains premerger notification and review for transactions covered by the relevant rules. That process does not apply identically to every acquisition worldwide; read the conditions stated for the actual deal.
Build a short transaction timeline
Record the announcement date, the language used and the official document supporting it. “Exploring options”, “entered an agreement” and “completed” should not be treated as interchangeable statuses. If a company gives an expected closing period, label it as an expectation until completion is confirmed.
List the conditions the parties disclose, without guessing that they have been satisfied. They might mention regulatory clearances, shareholder votes or other contractual requirements. A later update can change the expected timing, terms or outcome.
For an invented example, a buyer announces an agreement in March and expects completion later in the year. A research note written in April should say the acquisition is pending unless newer official evidence establishes otherwise. It should not silently rewrite the target as an already integrated division.
Look for a subsequent completion announcement or relevant filing. Check whether the transaction covered the entire company, selected assets or a particular business unit. Even completion does not mean every brand, system or customer process changes immediately.
Keep the original and later sources together so the sequence remains auditable. If the agreement is terminated, update the status rather than leaving the expected acquisition in a company profile. Clear stage labels help a reader understand what has happened, what remains conditional and which conclusions the available evidence supports.
